About the Illustrated Menagerie

I set up the Illustrated Menagerie in 2010 when an interest in the animal kingdom and illustration coincided in a module I had written for the BA Hons Illustration course.
The foundation of the original project lay in the depth and thoroughness of the research supporting the imagery, which aimed to go beyond mere decoration and instead serve as an active and ambitious means of communication. My goal was to create a repository of images derived from ongoing investigation and visualization of the animal kingdom. The inspiration behind these images stemmed from the research conducted, drawing from a wide range of source materials including art, literature, myth, legend, poetry, statistics, philosophy, phrases, fables, music, performances, symbols, and science.

More recently the blog embraces illustration from broader sources including visiting artists and graduates.
